TRANSPORT REGULATIONS
Safety of life and environment is a key issue when transporting cargo especially when it concerns dangerous goods. As a result, tanks containers are submitted to a number of international and national regulations covering the different means of transportation.

The main ones are :

IMDG International Maritime Dangerous Goods code (transportation of dangerous goods onboard vessels).
ADR - European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road.
RID - Regulations concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous goods by Rail.
CFR49 - Code of Federal Regulations Title 49 (Transportation in the USA).

These regulations are the backbone of the transportation of dangerous goods worldwide. As a basic principal they will tell, for a product, if transportation is authorized in a tank container and what type must be used. In the same time they will give all the requirements for the construction and testing of the tank containers.

Recently, these regulations have entered into an “harmonization process” in a way to simplify the enforcement of the regulations and to make them more homogeneous. Even though they are still different one another, they all include now the new concept of UN portable tank which defines, through T codes, the tank container specifications to be used for each dangerous substance when transportable in a tank container.

Additionally special provisions may be assigned to certain substances through TP notes.
